Sustainability
Adshel Infrastructure is committed to minimising its environmental impact. It supplies infrastructure that is recyclable at the end of its useful life, uses environmentally sustainable timber, integrates LED lighting and solar power energy whilst encouraging the use of public transport.

OUR MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES INCLUDE

  • Use of environmentally sustainable timber for the Town and Park range

Adshel is committed to providing timbers that come from environmentally friendly sources and stocks timbers from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified forests or Ecotimber from ecoforestry programs, ensuring that timber is obtained from forests and plantations managed to sustain their biodiversity, productivity and ecological integrity. Ecoforestry programs aim ti minimise their impact upon other ecosystems and support, and involve indigenous people living in the source area.

Adshel is the first accredited Australian street furniture supplier able to offer a Chain of Custody guarantee under the FSC guidelines. This Chain of Custody is issued by an independant third party and guarantees the environmental and social background of our timber. Specifiers can be assured that the timber sold as FSC certified comes from appropriate sources following correct commercial procedures

  • Recyclable Materials

Our bus shelters, walkways and other street furniture are manufactured from aluminium, which ensures longevity of the products and recycling suitability at the end of their useful life.

  • Design & installation of solar-powered street furniture

In an Australian first Adshel Infrastructure has developed and implemented solar powered street furniture. Solar panels installed on the roof of the shelters capture the energy of the sun which is stored and utilised at night to provide courtesy lighting to public transport users. This technologically advancements mean that our shelters no longer need to be connected to the main power supply.

Each solar powered bus shelter saves on average 200kg of CO2 emissions per year. Over 160 solar shelters across Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane have already been built. Adshel Infrastructure is also able to implement solar-powered solution for customised projects such as our bike shelters project in Victoria.

Apart from using solar power solutions for our street furniture, we are also equipping new structures with LED lighting, which is more energy efficient and has longer life cycle than standard lighting solutions.

BUSINESS PRACTICE

In addition, Adshel Infrastructure follows environmentally responsible practices in across our offices and participates in the Sustainability Advantage Program as part of the broader Adshel’s sustainability approach.

The high quality of Adshel Infrastructure’s street furniture ensures our products have a long life and do not require frequent replacement, which makes them a more sustainable solution. Ultimately our street furniture is built for pedestrians and encourages the use of public transport.

TIMBER PROCUREMENT POLICY STATEMENT

It is Adshel's policy that all timber and wood products are purchased from independently verifiable legal and responsibly managed sources. Adshel recognises that production and manufacture of timber based products can have significant economic, environmental and social impacts.

Responsible forest management is about preserving forests as a source of life for all those dependant on them. This is done by maintaining the forest's biodiversity, productivity and ecological processes.

Adshel believes that a strict timber procurement policy is a valuable tool to help tackle the challenges of illegal logging, deforestation and climate change. This helps Adshel to meet it's environmental responsibilities by ensuring that we have a neutral, if not positive effect on the world's forests.

Adshel's policy is to procure timbers through third party certification schemes such as FSC* certified timber and ecotimber. Certification is an inspection process that assesses the quality of forest management on the ground, and tracks timber and wood products through a chain of custody from raw material in the forest to a finished item.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a global non-profit international forest management organisation that is supported by the World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace, and the Australian Conservation Foundation with the purpose of promoting teh responsible management of the world's forests. The FSC certification system remains the most widely recognised and best regarded in the world.

In 2009 Adshel was successfully granted Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody Certification by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS)
